Make something which is Ugly, (you will see how difficult that is!)
it is based on the following thought.
«What fascinates about beauty is that it borders so closely to what is perceived as Ugly and the exciting contradiction is that if one wants to find new forms of beauty, one must actually tap into the source of ugliness.»
Furthermore, when one starts doing something Ugly, something wrong let’s say you lose your fear of failure as one starts from a «failed» position.
In addition, participants will learn the surface decoration technique, Niello, which they can use the workshop and in future jewelry projects
NEW YORK JEWELRY WEEK // TOGETHER WORLS APART
We love, we dream, we work and we live our lives apart, every day. The land we call home might be an exotic, mysterious, far away place for the rest of the world. This world we call home is actually many worlds, many different lands and people.
We were far apart in our own worlds, living our far apart lives, when those worlds came crashing down.
In what seemed to be one instant, all over our worlds, the very little, very normal, very inconsequential things we did every day became fond memories from a different time. Doing the groceries, seeing friends, having a cup of coffee.
All around us the talk was of danger, of contagion, of death. Work and play, day and night, became very different. Our lives seemed to have stopped, and planning for a future became a nearly impossible task.
But from this came a new vision: our neighbor just may be somebody from the other side of the world. Somebody who is not even in the same continent as we are. Our neighbor is any person, any creative, any artist, anyone worried as we are, anyone scared as we are, anyone hopeful as we are. Our neighbor may be in a different world, but our realities are the same. We share an era, we share a moment in history that will forever change society.
So geography became very different: Italy, Korea, Mexico, New York, came to mean «people», “dreams”, “emotion”, «distress», «joy», «creation», «labor», «soul», «workshop».
All over the world, all over our own little worlds, artists reached out. Makers reached out. Those who do. Those who love to do. Those who love.
For this project, designers and artists in Korea, Mexico and Italy shared a timeline, a flow of ideas and a sense of uncertainty.
Out of many different worlds we made a world where we could create and make. Where mind, spirit and tool became one. Worlds apart, we worked together. We made beauty with our hope, our loss, our fear, our joy. Worlds apart, we are neighbors. We are people. We dream up worlds together, and together we make them. Worlds apart, fire, metal and soul became one.

Baja California Sur: Leticia Salgado, impresión 3d, vaciado a la cera perdida en plata con baño de oro y perla japonesa akoya genuina.
Nayarit: Griselda Ulloa, talla de camafeo, concha king shell y acero.
Perú: Milagros Monforte, micro forja de plata y perla japonesa akoya genuina.
Chile: Norma Inzunza, micro forja en cobre, plata y alpaca con polvo de oro de 24k y perla japonesa akoya genuina.

Es un privilegio compartirles esto que hemos aprendido a hacer después de muchas navegaciones. Una de las razones de ser de Hard To Find es agregar el valor del diseño, pero del diseño de calidad, a todo lo que hacemos. Dejar de vender metal, de copiar lo que hacen los demás. Crear, en esta ciudad de creadores, diseño que merezca ese nombre. Pero las piezas que trajimos hoy responden a otra búsqueda. Quedaron exentas de los rigores del diseño. A estas piezas, que son el fruto directo de nuestra experiencia de aprendizaje, sólo les pedimos que fueran bellas y verdaderas. Sin consideraciones de mercado, sin pensar en posibles compradores, sin tomar en cuenta tendencias, escuelas o industrias. Son el fruto de la libertad creativa, sin más. El debate sobre qué es arte y qué no es demasiado complejo para esta ocasión, pero sí les puedo repeir una cosa: estas piezas sólo quieren ser bellas y verdaderas. Sólo quieren ser una expresión de la dicha y el espanto que el aprendizaje nos trae. Son el resultado de mensajes enviados a lugares muy remotos, de muchas voluntades reunidas, de muchas generaciones de maestros generosos. Hoy, aquí en nuestra Guadalajara, las maravillas, fruto de todas estas navegaciones, te invitan a imaginar y a disfrutar. Muchas gracias.
